N NQR and Orientational Ordering in Smectic Liquid Crystals

چکیده
Liquid crystals are systems which flow like liquids while retaining the mechanical and optical anisotropy of crystals. On a microscopic level they are characterized by molecular orientational order accompanied by a partial or complete translational disorder of the molecular positions (1~3) • Thermotropic liquid crystals are formed upon heating many anisotropic organic compounds, while lyotropic liquid crystals are obtained by mixing amphiphilic compounds with water. Lyotropic liquid crystals are especially important in biology in view of their role in the structure of cell membranes. Both thermotropic and lyotropic materials may exhibit more than one liquid crystalline phase. Smectic phases, whose specific property is the arrangement of the molecules into parallel layers, have been most intensively investigated during the last few years. Studies by means of miscibility relations (4-6), X-ray diffraction (7~15). nuclear magnetic resonance (16-21), nuclear quadrupole resonance,

NMR determination of smectic ordering of probe molecules.
The NMR spectra of the three solutes ortho-, meta-, and para-dichlorobenzene in the nematic and smectic A phases of the liquid crystals 8CB and 8OCB are analyzed to yield two orientational order parameters for each solute. Extrapolation of the asymmetry in the energy parameters that describe the orientational ordering in the nematic phase are used to provide estimates of the strength of the nem...
متن کاملNMR measurement of smectic ordering and nematic–smectic-A coupling in a liquid crystal
The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of three substituted benzenes as solutes in the liquid crystal 8CBwere investigated. The orientational order of all solutes was obtained in the nematic and smectic-A phases. A change in temperature dependence of orientational ordering was observed at the nematic to smectic-A phase transition. We analyzed these results via Kobayashi–McMillan theory ap...
متن کاملA phase-field-crystal model for liquid crystals.
On the basis of static and dynamical density functional theory, a phase-field-crystal model is derived which involves both the translational density and the orientational degree of ordering as well as a local director field. The model exhibits stable isotropic, nematic, smectic A, columnar, plastic-crystalline and orientationally ordered crystalline phases. As far as the dynamics is concerned, ...
متن کاملBond orientational order model for smectic B liquid crystals
2014 We show how recent theories of two dimensional melting can be carried over to provide natural order parameters for solid, smectic B, and smectic A phases of liquid crystals. Smectic B and other well-ordered smectic phases correspond to systems with bond orientational long range order and positional short range order in the plane of the smectic layers. The X-ray scattering predicted by this...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Indexes of Refraction Near the Smectic-A Smectic-C Transition: Orientational Order
The results of direct measurements of the principal indices of refraction in the smectic-A and smectic-C phases of two homologous liquid crystals are reported. These results are compared qualitatively with the orientational model of Straley and with a model based on anisotropic nematic flu.ctuations due to coupling between orientational and translational order.
